Serving the Poor,
Sharing the Truth of Christ

Guided by the love of Christ, the Diocese of Mamfe is committed to providing spiritual direction, vital social services, quality education, and advanced healthcare to all residents of the Mamfe area.

The Work of the Diocese of Mamfe

Nestled in the lush tropical forests of Cameroon’s Southwest region, the Diocese of Mamfe serves more than 82,000 predominantly impoverished residents. In these communities, the Diocese is not only a spiritual haven but also a provider of essential services:

  • Social Services:
In a region where agriculture is the primary occupation, the Diocese delivers critical communications and supplies to communities that cannot afford them on their own.

  • Healthcare:
Two hospitals and two clinics—including the Mary Health of Africa General Hospital—offer advanced care to those in need.

  • Education:
A network of 29 schools and Wisdom College, one of the top-ranked secondary schools in the region, provides essential learning opportunities.

The Challenges

Working in the Mamfe Diocese is both difficult and dangerous. The area is affected by prolonged and deadly conflicts between armed groups, which have cost the lives of over 6,000 people and led to the razing of hundreds of villages. Compounding this, there is little investment in critical infrastructure such as roads and communications, making it extremely challenging to reach remote, rural communities.

In these harsh conditions, the 43 priests serving Mamfe manage on an annual income of only about $400 each—often dipping into personal funds to meet the growing needs of their flock.

Supporting the Poor

With nearly 55 percent of the rural Mamfe population living below the poverty line, the financial burden on the Diocese is immense. Corruption has crippled government services, so residents depend on the Diocese for basic needs. To continue this vital work, the Diocese relies on generous donations from both inside and outside Cameroon.

Working for Peace

For nearly eight years, Cameroon has been embroiled in conflict between military and separatist forces, during which priests, religious personnel, and civilians have been held for ransom. In the midst of this turmoil, Bishop Aloysious courageously leads the Diocese. He has negotiated the release of hostages, helped protect innocent lives, and inspired local clergy to spread messages of peace in their communities.
